As a one-person business you wear every hat — and writing is the hat nobody trains you for. I tested five AI writing assistants over five weeks on my own solo operation: client proposals, newsletter, and a twice-weekly blog. Here is the setup that sounds like me without a $50/month bill, and the one tool I dropped.
| Tool | Use it for | Cost | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT (free/Plus) | Drafts, brainstorming, rewriting | $0 / $20 | Start here. |
| Grammarly (free) | Clean, on-tone client email | $0 | Keep it on always. |
| Notion AI | Notes + blog from meetings | +$10 | Nice if in Notion. |
| Jasper | Brand-voice at scale | $49+ | Skip solo. |
| Copy.ai | Quick social snippets | free/$36 | Optional. |
Monday: drag the week's meeting notes into Notion AI, get a blog draft. Tuesday: open ChatGPT Plus, paste the draft, ask for a tighter client-proposal version. Every outgoing client email runs through Grammarly's tone check. Total tool cost: $30/month, and I publish more than when I "wrote" everything by hand.

Jasper is good. For a solo writer it is also overkill. At $49/month I expected it to sound exactly like me — it got close, but a one-page style guide in ChatGPT did 90% of that for $29 less. I kept it for one client with strict voice rules, then cancelled. If you publish daily across brands, it earns its keep; for one voice, skip it.
Write three past pieces you are proud of. Paste them into ChatGPT and ask: "Extract my voice rules as a bullet list." Save that list. Every draft starts with "Use these voice rules." It beat every built-in "brand voice" feature I tried, and it is free.
ChatGPT free tier plus the free Grammarly extension covers most solo founders for $0. Upgrade to ChatGPT Plus only when you need longer context or file analysis daily.
Partly. The fastest path we found was a one-page style guide fed to ChatGPT. None are perfect; always read before you publish.
Usually no. For one person publishing a few posts a week, ChatGPT Plus plus a style guide does 90% of it.
You do not need a writing assistant subscription to sound professional. Free ChatGPT + free Grammarly + a saved voice list will carry a solo founder surprisingly far. Spend on Plus only when the free tier starts costing you time.
